Important Features of Automotive HV Cables

HV Cables serve a wide range of purposes in the Automotive and Transportation industries. Their primary function is to facilitate the safe transmission of electrical power at very high voltages - an occurrence which takes place on a regular basis in such industries.

Automotive HV Cables are used in electric and hybrid vehicles to transmit power and signals between individual components of a vehicle’s electrical system. Battery cables are more particular in the way that they function, as they specifically connect a vehicle’s battery to the rest of the electrical system. Conventional vehicle systems do not necessarily require HV cables as transmission of electricity does not exceed 12 volts. Insulation materials

High voltage cable insulation is essential to prevent electrical leakages and short circuits, and common materials include cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and ethylene propylene rubber (EPR).

Voltage rating

High Voltage power cable manufacturers intend for these cables to be able to handle amounts of voltage that stray significantly from the safe threshold, and so the voltage rating should match the intended application to ensure safe operation. Whilst all HV cables are designed to withstand the effects of high-power transmission, some are more durable than others so it is important to check the voltage rating before purchase.

Temperature resistance

The transmission of high voltage generates a lot of heat as a result of resistance, and the cables should be designed to handle the heat that is generated during this process without their insulation material deteriorating.

Resistance to harsh environments

In the automotive industry, cables may be exposed to a range of temperature variations, moisture, UV radiation and chemical exposure. Resistance to these conditions is crucial for long-term performance.
